Vojanovy Sady / Vojan Gardens

If you are a discerning visitor looking for a space to relax, complete with a playground, water features, plenty of greenery, and absolute tranquillity, Vojanovy Sady is the perfect place for you. These gardens acquired their peaceful character in the 17th century when Emperor Ferdinand III purchased part of the area and established a monastery for the Order of Discalced Carmelites. The monastic sisters surrounded the entire garden with a high wall featuring niches, which included the chapel of St. John of Nepomuk.

One of the two main pedestrian axes runs through the gardens from this chapel, interwoven with another pair of chapels. The Chapel of St. Teresa of Ávila is adorned with ceiling paintings. At the same time, the Chapel of St. Elias, hidden behind dense bushes, invites exploration with its stalactite interior. Throughout history, the ownership of the site changed several times, bringing various modifications along with it. As you stroll through the gardens, you will encounter not only flowering trees but also an elevated terrace with ornamental shrubs where peacocks like to rest, a tennis court, and the rear section of the Ministry of Finance building, which owned the land in the first half of the 20th century. However, the area has been open to the general public since 1954. It is named after the famous theater actor Eduard Vojan, who was born on nearby Míšeňská Street.
